Firewalls
Definition
Setup firewalls to filter and control incoming and outgoing traffic to and from the system
How it works
Firewalls act as barriers between networks, controlling incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined
security rules. They inspect data packets, blocking or allowing them based on criteria like source, destination, and
type. Stateful inspection tracks the state of active connections, permitting only legitimate traffic.
Application-layer firewalls analyze data at the application level. Network Address Translation (NAT) conceals
internal IP addresses. Firewalls prevent unauthorized access, mitigate cyber threats, and enhance network security.
They are deployed in hardware, software, or both, forming a crucial defense layer in safeguarding systems and
networks from malicious activities.
Considerations
- Regularly update firewall rules to adapt to evolving threats.
- Implement default-deny policies, allowing only necessary traffic.
- Consider both hardware and software firewalls for layered protection.
